Abstract

557,323. Surgical bandages. SHAW. A. P. April 14, 1942, No. 4876. [Class 140] A surgical bandage which is self-adhesive but does not stick to the skin is made by coating or spraying a continuous length of textile material with a thermoplastic artificial resin dissolved in a solvent to which a plasticizer is added, the coating being such that when dried it does not form a continuous film but leaves the meshes open. The resin may be dissolved in a non-water-solulble or partly water-soluble solvent and an emulsion or suspension of this may be formed in a solution of a water-soluble solvent in water. The solvent and water are dried off while the fabric is proceeding on a stenter. The resin may be an interpolymer of two vinyl compounds; any known product made by polymerizing vinyl halides, vinyl organic esters, or vinyl benzenes may be used. Aldehydes may be used in the polymerizing. Polyacrylic resins, polystyrenes, methyl methacrylate. coumarone, indene artificial resins or isoprene artificial rubber may be used. As plasticizer di- or tri-butyl phthalate. diacetin tricresyl phosphate or tributyl phosphate may be used. Substantially equal parts of resin and plasticizer are normally used. As emulsifying agents triethanolamine oleate, saponin or methanol may be used. As solvents benzene, acetone, methylated, spirit or carbon tetrachloride may be used.
