Abstract

680,998. Coating paper webs; glazing paper. CLAYTON, T. A. (United States Rubber Co.). March 11, 1949. No. 6679/49. Drawings to Specification. Classes 96 and 140. Paper is glossed by coating with an aqueous dispersion of one of the synthetic resins listed below and which has a second order transition temperature, T<SP>2</SP>, between 40‹C and 125‹C, heating the coated paper to a temperature between 20‹C and 60‹C above T<SP>2</SP> to dry and set the coating, pressing the coated paper against a highly polished roll heated to a temperature between 40‹C and 80‹C above T<SP>2</SP> and stripping the paper from this roll at this temperature. The operations are performed continuously upon a web of paper. The synthetic resins, which have a M.W. above 25,000 are polystyrene, polythene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl alcohol, polymethylmethacrylate, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, copolymers of styrene with butadiene 1, 3 or acrylonitrite, and acrylonitrite-isobutylene copolymers. The aqueous dispersion may contain emulsifying or dispersing agents and may be made of the preformed polymer or may be obtained by the emulsion polymerisation of the monomeric material. Specification 473,657 is referred to.
