Abstract

An orthopaedic bandage comprises a bandage material having applied thereto separate layers, respectively comprising water - permeably bonded plaster of Paris and fusible water-dispersible intermediate condensation product of melamine - formaldehyde synthetic resin. A composition containing plaster of Paris, methyl cellulose and polyvinyl acetate as a binder, industrial methylated spirit and methyl chloride as a dispersing agent, a catalyst, e.g. aluminium sulphate or ammonium chloride, for the intermediate condensation product and, if desired, an accelerator or retarder for the setting of the plaster of Paris, is spread on cotton fabric. Melamine formaldehyde intermediate condensation product is sprinkled over the surface of the plaster of Paris composition and the spread fabric is dried. Alternatively, the plaster of Paris composition is partially dried after spreading and is covered by a layer of a composition comprising melamine formaldehyde resin intermediate condensation product, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, cellulose ether or methylated gelatine as a binder and industrial methylated spirit as a dispersing agent. The doubly spread material is then dried. The melamine formaldehyde layer may be applied to the fabric before the plaster of Paris layer. The melamine formaldehyde layer may also contain urea formaldehyde intermediate condensation product. The bandage is applied to the body after dipping in water. Specification 660,653 is referred to.
