Abstract
839,647. Cooling aircraft. VICKERSARMSTRONGS (AIRCRAFT) Ltd., and WALLIS, B. N. Dec. 2, 1957 [Feb. 13, 1957], No. 5004/57. Class 64(2) [Also in Group XXXIII] An aircraft structure is insulated from heat generated at supersonic speeds by surrounding it with an envelope consisting of an outer skin B of refracting sheet material such as resin-bonded glass fabric, and an inner skin A such as light alloy capable of transmitting loads into the airframe from the outer skin. The skins are secured together in spatial relationship by spools or spacers D having low thermal conductivity, the intervening cavity being sub-divided into separate areas by channel-section members (not shown) bonded to the interior faces of both panels. The resulting separate cavities are each evacuated of air via a suction pipe connected to a common electrically-driven exhaust pump. The interior surfaces of the panels are polished to minimize heat transference by internal radiation. For use when the aircraft speed may be reduced for periodical cooling, there are aluminium ducts running fore and aft through the airframe structure and supplied with air from plenum chambers to which it is admitted by retractable scoops.
