XXXVI] An insulating bushing comprises a body of insulating material having a hole therethrough for the passage of a conductor; and having on its surface two metallic-coated zones, both of which surround the hole, but at least one of them being discontiguous with the. hole; the body and coating being formed by sintering a body of fluorocarbon resin, having admixed therewith a metallic powder, e.g. copper, at those parts of the body which correspond with the coating. After sintering, a metallic coating, e.g. silver and tin is deposited on the metalcontaining parts of the body. The fluorocarbon resin is either polytetrafluoroethylene or polychlorotrifluoroethylene. The insulator may be e.g. a.circular disc with concentric coated zones on one face; or a cylinder or truncated cone with coated zones around the ends or on the end faces. A multi-conductor bushing may have several holes, each surrounded by a metallic zone, an outer zone. being provided around the edge of the bushing, so that a leadthrough conductor may be soldered to the zone around each hole and the outer zone may be soldered into an aperture in a container (which may be metal or metallized glass or ceramic) using preformed solder washers and H.F. induction heating. An alternative method of providing the two coated zones is to coat the whole of a surface and then cut away an intermediate zone.
