Abstract
5-Hydroxymethyl furfural is obtained by a process comprising heating an aqueous solution of glucose, fructose, invert sugar, fructosans, sucrose or hydrolysed wood or starch to a temperature in the range 250-380 DEG C. for a time not in excess of 2 minutes but sufficient to form 5-hydroxymethyl furfural. In some cases it is desirable to use an acid catalyst, e.g. levulinic acid. Preferably the process is carried out by continuously passing the sugar solution into a reactor and continuously withdrawing the reaction product. During the reaction a tar which is soluble in many organic solvents, e.g. furfural, ethyl acetate, formamide, dimethyl formamide, and dimethyl sulphoxide, may be formed. In view of the instability of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural it should be removed from the reaction mixture as quickly as possible, for example, by operating continuously in the presence of an extractive solvent such as furfural whereby the aqueous sugar solution and furfural are pumped co- or counter-currently through the reactor.
