Abstract

838,945. Retardometers. CHURCHILL & CO. Ltd., V. L. June 30, 1958 [July 30, 1957], No. 24114/57. Class 106 (3). A deceleration or braking meter comprises a pendulum suspended in such a manner that it is free to swing in any direction and a marking device carried by the pendulum which is capable of recording movement of the pendulum on a card located on the meter. As shown, a pendulum comprises a body 7 and a weight 6 rotatable on the body 7, the body 7 being mounted in gimbals 8 and 9 for universal movement. The gimbals 8, 9 are mounted on a body 13 carrying a card holder 14. The body 7 carries a pen 10 pressed by a spring 17 into engagement with a card on the holder. A stop 18, having a V-shaped opening, receives the weight 6 when the apparatus is not in use; a device 19 retains the pendulum in this position. The base 4 is supported on the floor of the vehicle, the retardation of which is to be tested. Levelling screws 23 are adjusted, such that the pen 10 is vertical. The device 19 is released to permit the pendulum to swing, upon retardation of the vehicle, thus causing the pen 10 to record on a card the degree of deceleration. Uneven braking, causing sideways movement of the vehicle, will be indicated by deviation of the trace from the central line. The pendulum movement is damped by a vane 30 secured to the gimbal 8 so as to pass through a magnetic field between permanent magnets 31.
