838,384. Filters ; filter media. BOSCH G.m.b.H., R. July 19, 1958, No. 23228/58. Class 46. One or more crimped synthetic threads are wound loosely around a supporting tube 10, Fig. 1, to form a cylinder 11, the turns of the winding being joined together at the points of contact either (a) by adhesive which is sprayed on during winding, or which is used to impregnate the cylinder after winding, or (b) by treating the cylinder with a volatile swelling agent or solvent for the fibres, such agent or solvent being thereafter allowed to evaporate. Process (b) may be applied to any filter body constructed of fibres or threads whose surface is capable of swelling or being dissolved, or of substances containing such. In forming the cylinder 11 the crimped threads may first be stretched straight and then wound on an expanded mandrel to form a winding of enlarged radial dimensions, the mandrel being thereafter contracted inside the winding to permit the threads to resume their crimped form. In Fig. 3 crimped thread 31 is drawn from a looselyrunning storage bobbin 32 (having a braking device 36 to 39) by a driven feed roller 33 around which the thread passes once on its way to a winding mandrel 34, driven at the same speed as the roller 33, the arrangement being such that the thread is in crimped condition in the winding 35. Fig. 2 (not shown) shows a filter element without a supporting tube 10.
