An apparatus for treating a tube having a mass of thread wound onto it with an outer unwinding end thereon, comprising: handling means for rotating the tube in a first direction corresponding to its normal winding direction and rotating sequentially said tube in a second direction opposite to said first direction, and means that provide a current of fluid against said tube to drag said unwinding end and remove it from said tube when it is rotated in said first and second directions.
