Abstract

838,091. Moulding powdered materials, e.g. metals and metal oxides. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 5, 1951 [Jan. 5, 1950], No. 258/50. Class 87(2). [Also in Group II] A sheet or disc, e.g. a window for an X-ray tube, is moulded from e.g. powdered beryllium, boron, alumina, beryllia, magnesia or a mixture of iron, nickel and cobalt, by pressing the powdered material whilst confining its lateral surfaces by a deformable metal, e.g. soft iron or tungsten, strip 5. Layers 4 of beryllium formedas a paste with paraffin are placed between "Nimonic" (Registered Trade Mark) plates 2 coated with colloidal graphite and the whole pressed in a hydraulic press. The beryllium is heated in the press to 800‹C. by elements 3. Refractory oxides may be placed between graphite discs and heated in a high-frequency furnace. Boron may be cold pressed and subsequently sintered. Sheets may be hot or cold pressed between rollers with wires preventing the lateral spread of the material.
