Abstract

1340102 Sintered refractory bodies TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO Ltd 21 May 1971 [23 May 1970] 16364/71 Heading C7D A refractory body with a fibrous structure is formed by hot pressing in a non oxidising atmosphere a powder mixture containing at least one of Al 4 C 3 , AlN, SiC, Si 3 N 4 , B 4 C and BN and 0À5-15 mole % of at least one of Sc 2 O 3 , La 2 O 3 , Y 2 O 3 , lanthanides and Y, Al garnet Al 3 Y 5 O 12 . The powders, particle size 0À5-2 microns are pressed at 20-1500 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> and 1300-2400‹C. The mixture may also contain BeO, SiO 2 and TiB and may be cold compacted prior to hot pressing. In an example, 97 mol A1N and 3 mol Y 2 O 3 with stearic acid was compacted at 5000 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> prior to hot pressing in flowing N 2 . The press temperature was raised stepwise for hot pressing and different pressures applied at different temperatures e.g. 400 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> at 1400‹C and 800 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> at 1700‹ C,
