Abstract
<PICT:0837690/III/1> <PICT:0837690/III/2> Zone melting apparatus comprises an enclosure 5 (Fig. 1) for an elongated specimen 1 and heating means including a primary coil 36 outside the enclosure 5 and a secondary coil 37 inside the enclosure encircling a portion of the specimen 1, the coils 36 and 37 being connected to a movable support rod 42 whereby the coil 37 may be moved along the specimen 1 while maintaining a fixed position relative to the coil 36. Secondary coil 37, which is energized by primary coil 36, comprises a single turn having an inner portion 37a (Fig. 3) which heats specimen 1 and produces a molten zone 1a by currents induced therein. An additional secondary coil 40 having two turns each with an inwardly bending portion 40a, is energized by an additional primary coil 39, and induces currents in the molten zone 1a which are repulsed by the currents in coil 40 so that the repulsion helps to support the molten zone. Coils 39 and 40 are also mounted on support rod 42 and move in fixed relationship to each other and to coils 36 and 37. Coils 37 and 40 are hollow and are water cooled. Container 5 is airtight and is mounted on a platform 7 (Fig. 1) which may be adjusted to a horizontal position. Container 5 is coactuated by a pump 32. The specimen 1 is held between supports 2 and 3, the lower support 3 being rotated by a rod 81 magnetically coupled to a drive shaft 74.
