Abstract
837,664. Reciprocating pumps. MEKLER, D. Sept. 10, 1958 [Sept. 24, 1957], No. 29015/58. Class 102(1). A reciprocating pump comprises a piston 8, reciprocating in a cylinder 5, having a recess 9 in which fits a stationary plunger 17 provided with an axial passage 20 thus forming a low pressure pumping chamber 22 and a high pressure pumping chamber 23. On the suction stroke of the piston 8 liquid is drawn from a supply tank 3 via passages 24b, 24a and non- return valve 26 to chamber 25 from where liquid flows through passage 24 to chamber 22 and past non-return valve 28 and axial passage 20 to chamber 23. On the discharge stroke of the piston 8 liquid is delivered from the chambers past valve 29 to passage 31 which leads to the outlet (not shown). The pressure in the outlet passage 31 also acts on a piston member 36 which opens a spring loaded valve 38 above a predetermined pressure and this valve opens passageways (not shown) which allows the liquid in the low-pressure chamber 22 to be by-passed directly to the tank 3 during the discharge stroke. The valve 38 may be in the form of a cylindrical slide valve and the loading of this valve may be controlled from outside the pump.
