Abstract

837,635. Friction clutches; linkwork. CREED & CO. Ltd. June 27, 1958 [July 4, 1957], No. 21123/57. Classes 80 (2) and 80 (3). A driven spring clutch-band 1 is connected at one end by a mounting lug 2 to an arm 5 fast with a driven shaft, and carries at its other end a mounting lug 6, opposing flat faces 20, 20 on the mounting lugs engaging three or a greater odd number of bearing rollers 9 contained in a slot 10 in a disengaging rocker 11 freely pivoting on pins 12, 13 carried by a bracket integral with the arm 5, the spring band 1 normally gripping a driving drum (not shown) but introduction of a pawl (not shown) into the path of a lug 15 carried by the rocker 11 causing the rocker to pivot, upon engagement between the lug and pawl, so that the bearing rollers 9 cam the surfaces 20, 20 on the mounting lugs 2, 6 apart, and thereby disengage the band from the drum. When the rocker 11 has been turned to its clutch disengaged position, the axis of the bearing rollers 9 is held slightly inclined to the normal joining the faces 20, 20 on the mounting lugs 2, 6, as shown. On removal of the pawl from engagement with the lug 15, the bias of the spring band 1 is sufficient to act through the faces 20, 20 upon the rollers 9 to turn the rocker 11 back to its clutch-engaged position, when a projection 17 on the rocker engages the lug 2. A-felt pad 14 carried by the rocker 11 feeds oil to the rollers 9. According to the Provisional Specification, the clutch is particularly intended for use with teleprinter apparatus, and the spring band 1 is of varying thickness to give even pressure all round the driving-drum. Specifications 794,091 and 829,134 are referred to.
