Abstract
1,035,664. Friction clutches. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. March 18, 1963 [March 21, 1962], No. 10605/63. Heading F2C. A clutch comprising plane, or, as shown, frusto-conical friction engaging surfaces 45, has torque-assisted engagement effected by the camming action of rollers 52, pivoting about pins 51 fast in a shaft 41 and running on inclined surfaces 53 at the back of a friction ring 47, clutch engagement being initiated on sliding axially a control sleeve 49 connected to the friction ring through a pin-and-slot connection 64, 66, Fig. 7 (not shown), the ring engaging its coacting friction surface and thus being turned a limited amount relatively to the control sleeve and to the rollers. Spring- biased bale detents engage in pockets 62 &c. in the control sleeve 49 to hold the latter in the clutch engaged &c. positions, the pockets having surfaces so inclined that the bale detents bias the control sleeve in the clutch-engaged direction. As shown, two alternatively engaged similar friction rings 47, 48 are arranged on opposite sides of the rollers 52, and springs 58 co-operate with sliding plates 56, 57 to bias both rings to their disengaged positions. In a modification, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), a single friction ring is mounted on one side of the camming rollers, and disengaging springs act between the friction ring and the mounting of the roller pivot pins. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 909,507.
