Abstract

Polymeric materials are made by dispersing styrene or a mixture of monomers containing at least 50% by weight of styrene in an aqueous latex of polychloroprene, allowing substantially all the monomeric material to become absorbed on the polychloroprene particles under non-polymerizing conditions and thereafter causing the absorbed monomeric material to polymerize. Monomers specified for use in admixture with styrene are chloroprene, vinyl toluene and xylene, acrylic and methacrylic esters and acrylonitrile. Polymerization may be initiated by the use of organic peroxides and hydroperoxides or potassium persulphate.
