Abstract

837,186. Mass separators. SLEPIAN, J. June 3, 1958 [June 24, 1957], No. 17683/58. Class 39(1). The invention relates to an isotope separator, such as described in Specification 797,558, in which an arc discharge including ions of the isotopes and electrons is produced in an axial magnetic field and the isotopes and ions are subjected to a radial electric field in the region of the arc discharge, the isotope ions being separated by a combination of D.C. circumferential electric fields, produced between radial plates and the axial magnetic field. In the invention (1) the radial plates for producing a circumferential D.C. electric field are a pair of curved conductors 21, 23 enclosing a generally triangular space, and the arc electrodes 51, 53 are disposed in the region where the distance between the conductors is a minimum, (2) the magnet polepieces 93, 95 and the exciting coils 97, 99 are correspondingly triangular, and (3) the ions are collected by a plurality of radial slats 71 which are conductively connected together in pairs. The ions are deposited on the sides of the slat or each connected pair which is nearest the positive conductor 21, the slats nearer the conductor 21 being progressively more enriched in the heavier isotope while the slats nearer the negative conductor 23 being progressively more enriched in the lighter isotope. The neutral molecules pass through the spaces between the slats. Single or sets of overlapping plates 41, 43 are provided top and bottom of the apparatus. Ring electrodes 201 surrounding the arc electrode holders 55, 57 provide the radial electric field in the region of the arc for initially projecting ions and electrons between the conductors 21, 23. In a modification the slat assembly 71 may consist of walls defining holes through which the uncharged particles pass.
