Abstract

836,649. Angular bending. SUTTON ENGINEERING CO. Aug. 30, 1957, No. 27436/57. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for correcting the contour of and for recontouring previously formed metal stock comprises a roll stand 1, Fig. 4, having a pair of housings 2, a pair of roll spindles 6 and 7 journalled in the housings, each spindle being adapted to receive adjustably and removably at least one roll, means for driving at least one of the spindles, a plurality of horizontal crossmembers 11, 12, 20, 21 extending between the housings and carrying a plurality of slidable crossheads denoted by letters A to L (only half of which are shown, Fig. 4), separate means for adjusting the position of each cross-head, a separate tool-holder 41 detachably and slidably mounted in each crosshead, separate means for vertically adjusting each tool-holder and an idler roll 48 detachably mounted on each toolholder, at least two of the crossheads being positioned so that the attached idler rolls have their axes in the same vertical plane as the spindle axes and at least two of the crossheads being positioned on the delivery side of the roll stand with attached idler rolls opposing each other and with their axes in a vertical plane parallel to the plane of the spindle axes. The spindles 6, 7 are driven by a motor 63, Fig. 2 (not shown), through a differential gear 64 and a reduction gear 65 so that the peripheral speed of the traction rolls mounted on the spindles may be the same notwithstanding a difference in diameter. One of the housings 2 is slidable transversely of the stand 1 on a bed 61 (Fig. 2, not shown), leaving one end of the spindles free for exchanging the traction rolls. The upper roll-spindle 7 is mounted in spherical bearings and may be angled in a vertical plane by differential application of screw-downs. Pairs of main crossheads A, B and C, D are carried on cross-members 11 and 12 respectively, each cross-member comprising two bars. The main crossheads are each adjustable along approximately half the length of these members by screws 15. Each crosshead carries an idle roll, such as roll 48, mounted on an adapter 47 fixed in tool-holder 41 which is vertically adjustable by a screw 43. The axes of the idle rolls are thus located in the same vertical plane as the spindles 6 and 7 and may be angled as required in this plane by adjusting the adapters. Auxiliary crossheads are slidably and removably mounted in pairs EF, IJ, HK, GL on opposite sides of the H-section cross-members 20, 21 located on the delivery side of the stand 1, idle rolls carried as before described being located in a vertical plane parallel to that containing spindles 6, 7. The auxiliary crossheads are constructed so that those mounted at the same end but on opposite sides of the cross-members 20, 21 may pass each other freely when adjusted horizontally by screws 23 which permit movement of each crosshead along half the length of the cross-members. For accessibility the screw adjustments for the auxiliary and main crossheads on the remote side from the operator are chain-driven from square-ended sub-shafts, the latter being rotatable from the operator's side of the stand. A previously rolled or extruded section 80 is recontoured by a traction roll 86, Fig. 7, detachably mounted on the spindle 7, and which bends a distorted. flange 81 downwards against supporting idle rolls 85, 87, which replace the rolls 48 and are supported from the main crossheads C and D. Further traction rolls 82, 82a, 83 detachably mounted on spindle 6 support the section as well as drive it forward. To prevent buckling of slender sections an endless draw-chain 88 may assist the traction movement. Alternatively the recontouring may be carried out by the idle rolls carried on the auxiliary crossheads in which case the rolls on and in the plane of the spindles act as traction and guide rolls only. A section may be corrected by one or more passes through a single stand or alternatively a single pass through several stands in tandem may be used with successive sets of rolls acting to eliminate imperfections in different parts of the section. The stands may be slidably mounted on a pair of rails resting on an enclosed frame so that the distance between the stands may be adjusted to prevent buckling of slender sections. Guide rolls 76 are added on the approach side of the stands. In a modification the upper main crossheads, e.g. M, Fig. 14, are slidably mounted on bars 202, 203 and the lower main crossheads e.g. N, are slidable on a bar 206 and in a slot 207, all the crossheads being on the delivery side of the stand. A tongue 210 and a groove 211 engages each main crosshead with an auxiliary crosshead so that both may be simultaneously adjusted by the screws 23. Extending links, e.g. 218 on the tool-holders, e.g. 215, of the main crossheads transmit vertical movement from auxiliary tool-holders, e.g. 221, through a removable shear-pin 220 so that the rolls, e.g. 217, may be adjusted by the auxiliary adjusting screws 43. When contouring slender sections non-rotating tools may be attached to the tool holders in place of the tool rolls, the section being drawn through the tools by a draw-chain or a draw-bar.
