Abstract

741,152. Rolling flanged and profile bars. DORMAN, LONG & CO., Ltd. March 23, 1954 [April 2, 1953], No. 9285/53. Class 83 (4). The finishing section of a rolling mill plant comprises a number of stations spaced apart along the direction of travel at which one or more alternative roll housings may be accommodated, removable work-supporting tables being arranged between the stations so that the required gap may be left for the roll stands used. In one example, base plates 32a, 32b, 32c, Figs. 3 and 4, embedded in concrete have alternative shoulders 33, 34, 36 on which different roll housings 35, 37 may be mounted. The roll housing 35 for a universal beam mill comprising a pair of horizontal rolls and a pair of vertical end rolls for special " H " and " I " sections is mounted on the shoulders 33 and a housing 37 for an edging mill which rolls the edges of the special sections is mounted on the shoulders 36. On removal of the housings 35, 37, rolls of a standard structural mill having side-by-side passes of diminishing area for rolling standard joists, channels, &c. may be assembled in the housing 37 which is then mounted on the shoulders 34. The rolls may alternatively be assembled in a housing having the same dimensions as the housing 35 so that the shoulders 34 are not required. The roller table 14, Fig. 3, preceding the edging mill housing 37 runs on wheels 43 over rails 26 arranged transversely to the line of the work and is moved to one side when the housings are changed so that a longer table 25, Fig. 4, running on rails 27 can be brought into position. The roller table 11 following the rolls may have an additional roller 59 added by the attachment of a mounting 58. Each of the roller tables 14, 25 has electric motors 45, 48 for driving the carriages along the tracks and for driving the rollers 49 carrying the work between the stands. The tables are mounted on pivots 46 and are adjustable in height on the carriages by screw jacks 47 adjacent to the roll stands. The drive for the universal beam rolls comprises a pair of electric motors 15, 17, Fig. 1, with driving shafts 19, and the drive for the edging rolls comprises smaller motors 16, 18 with shafts 20. On change over to the standard structural mill, the motors 15, 17 are coupled to the rolls and the motors 16, 18 are disconnected. In another arrangement (not shown), a pair of motors in tandem drive both main rolls through a gearbox having two output shafts. Housings 65, Fig. 7, suitable for interchangeably mounting edging mill rolls and structural mill rolls are slidably mounted on feet 66 to suit the roll lengths and have recesses 79 for mounting interchangeable stripper guides 77 of different lengths. Brackets 80 provide adjustable mountings for side guides 81 when the housings are used with edging mill rolls. The side guides may be adjustable through screw-threaded spindles (not shown) coupled to the pass adjustments screw jacks so that the guides are automatically adjusted between successive passes.
