A cloth cutting apparatus for cutting the edges of layers of material secured together by basting stitches, and with one or more layers cut back from the edge of the other layer or layers, comprises two cutting mechanisms operable in vertical planes at a fixed distance apart and a cutting mechanism operable in a horizontal plane over the whole distance between the vertical planes, the cutting mechanism operable in a horizontal plane being mounted so as to enter between the layer or layers not to be cut back and that or those to be cut back, and operable slightly in advance of the other two cutting mechanisms. The apparatus shown comprises a spring-pressed shearing knife 6 oscillatable in a horizontal plane and co-operable with a stationary shearing knife 5 for cutting the basting stitches d, Fig. 3, uniting the layers a, b, c of a jacket lapel, a knife 16 oscillatable in a vertical plane and co-operable with a fixed cutting jaw 15 located on the knife 5 for cutting the edge of the upper, outer layer a of the lapel and a knife 21 oscillatable in a vertical plane and co-operable with an edge 20 of the knife 5 for cutting the edge of the lower, lining layers b, c of the lapel. The knife 6 is carried by an oscillatable post 8 and the knives 16, 21 by rockable shafts 17, 22, the post 8 and shafts 17, 22 being driven via link levers by eccentrics 2, 3, 4 on a driving shaft 1. The shaft 17 is located above, and the shafts 1, 22 below, a work plate which has an opening through which the trimmings pass.
