Abstract

836,466. Building units; joining metal sheets; transparent sheets; floors &c. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORPORATION Aug. 12, 1957 [Jan. 7, 1957], No. 25423/57. Classes 20(2), 20(3), 20(4) and 87(1) A structural unit for building roofs, ceilings, walls, domes &c., comprises a diamond-shaped or square sheet 1 of aluminium, synthetic plastics, glass &c., bowed about its axis M-M, the corners 4, 5 on the other diagonal axis N-N being connected by a hollow strut 6. The sheet is creased along lines 12, 13 radiating from the corners 2, 3 respectively, and marginal flanges are provided as at 7, 8. The units are so assembled to form a substantially plane wall &c., or a geodesic dome that the struts form a framework of hexagons, Fig. 4, or other regular polygons. Each set of six units is connected at a common vortex by a member 20, Figs. 4, 6, each unit being secured to one spoke 42 of the member 20 by bolts or rivets engaged in registering openings 50, 50<SP>1</SP> in the unit and spoke respectively. The flanges of adjacent units are connected by engaging bolts or rivets in openings 52 or by applying a sealing compound or by welding, and the struts also are connected to one another. Additional triangular units 20<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, with or without a strut along one edge may be used to complete the structure.
