Class 73 Bottles fed in succession on a conveyer have labels applied to them by a suction delivery drum rotatably mounted at one side of the conveyer to nip each bottle between itself and a pressure member mounted at the other side of the conveyer and to apply each label by rolling action between itself and the bottle. According to the invention the labelling machine is designed to apply labels to both flat-faced and circular bottles. For labelling flat or substantially flat-faced bottles, the delivery drum 6, Fig. 2, is rotated with a peripheral speed equal to the speed of the conveyer 10 and the pressure member, which comprises a drum 16, is also rotated in the same direction and with the same peripheral speed as the conveyer. The drum 6 thus rolls the label on to the bottle. For labelling bottles of circular section, the drum 16 is stationary and an endless band 17, which for flat faced bottles moves with the drum 16 around a pulley 19, is also stationary and is moved across the conveyer to the position shown in Fig. 9. This causes the bottle to rotate and application of the label, the bottle then rolling forward at one half of the peripheral speed of the delivery drum 6, the conveyer being also driven at one half of that sped. For flat-faced bottles endless bands 20, 21 moving together as shown in Fig. 2 press the labels firmly to the bottles before discharge, while in the case of circular bottles, the band 21 is stationary and the band 22, still driven, further rolls the bottles along the band 21. Spacers 24, Fig. 8, adjustably carried by the drum 6 ensure that each bottle is correctly positioned in relation to the suction openings 9 and to the labels 7A held thereby.
