835,537. Cooling hot granular &c. materials. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Oct. 29, 1958 [Nov. 15, 1957], No. 34742/58. Class 51 (2). Apparatus for cooling iron powder agglomerates discharged from a forming device 10 comprises a shoot 12 with a coarse screen 13 for removing fires, a quench tank 16, and a conveyer 18 driven by a variable-speed motor 21 by which the agglomerates can be given a controlled immersion time. A pump 23 delivers a watersuspension of fine material from the bottom of the tank to a filter 25 through a valve 26 controlled by a known device 27 subject to the water pressure in the tank. Cold water is supplied through a pipe 28 having a valve 30 controlled by a known device 30 subject to the temperature of the water in the tank. The controlled quenching is designed to produce a dry product at a temperature at which it is not readily reoxidized.
