Abstract
895,282. Reducing iron ore. R-N CORPORATION. Sept. 18, 1958 [Feb. 19, 1958], No. 29957/58. Class 72. Iron ore is reduced with a carbonaceous reducing agent, without fusion, to produce finely divided iron containing combined and dissolved carbon, the product being slowly cooled from above 730‹C. to below 650‹C. but not below 150‹C. at a rate not exceeding 165‹C. per minute to prevent the formation of martensite in such amount as would adversely effect the mutual adherence of the iron particles on being compressed together. As shown, kiln 10 is supplied continuouslywith feed 1 comprising ore, limestone and coke, and the kiln is heated by flame 3. After 12 hours reduced ore at 1050‹C. to 1150‹C. is passed through conduit 16 to cooler 18 comprising a large steel drum rotated at 1À5 r.p.m. in water bath 26. The material 5 cooled to 540‹C. to 480‹C. is discharged through shoot 24 which opens below the surface of water 30 in quench tank 32 from which it is removed by rake 34.
