Abstract
835,354. Incubators. GETINGE MEKANISKA VERKSTADS A.B. Jan. 28, 1958 [April 1, 1957], No. 2876/58. Class 5(2). [Also in Group XIII] In an incubator, primarily for cultivating microorganisms, the incubating enclosure comprises a double-walled tank 1 closed hermetically by a cover 5 and having an air inlet in a casing 8 and an air outlet 15. The tank is pivoted at 27 and 28 to two standards 29 and 30, so that by turning the handle 34, the inclination of the tank to the horizontal can be varied. The tank is further provided with couplings 20 for the attachment thereto of any required accessories, with an inspection window 17, a sample opening 18, and a stirrer attached to a spindle 64 at the bottom of the tank and driven by a motor 82. The apparatus includes a steam generator and a tank of cold water housed within the standard 30, from which steam and water are circulated (see Group XIII) around the incubator. Prior to the growth of the organisms, the steam is allowed to circulate to sterilize all parts of the incubator, and, by passing between the walls of the incubator tank, to boil the culture medium. Circulation of the steam is then halted by means of suitable cocks, and the water, whose temperature is governed by heating and control devices in the standard 29, is circulated between the walls of the tank 1, thereby regulating the temperature of the latter to allow growth of the organisms. Both the water and steam circuits pass through the pivots 27 and 28 of the tank. When the growing process is completed, the heating device may be switched off and the water cooled by adding ice to the storage tank through the opening 93, wherebythe tank is cooled and acts as a suitable storage container for the culture medium. The air content of the medium is regulated by means of the stirrer and by tilting the tank, thereby varying the surface area of the medium. By removal of the stirrer, the tank 1 may be used for hatching hens eggs, and if it is desired to grow bacteria in a small quantity of culture liquid, a small container for the purpose may be attached to the stirrer spindle 64.
