Abstract
835,214. Electric transducers. EISLER, P. March 21, 1956 [Jan. 17, 1955], No. 1437/55. Class 40 (1). [Also in Groups XI and XXXVI] An electrical resistor designed to function as a temperature or strain gauge and comprising a metal-foil pattern secured to an insulating base is produced from a cupro-nickel foil which has been cold-rolled, thus making the foil anistropic, the resistor pattern being so orientated with respect to the direction of rolling that the principal direction of current flow in the component substantially coincides with the direction of greatest density of atomic population in the crystal structure of the foil. In the arrangement illustrated the direction of rolling OR of the foil is indicated by an arrow 3 marked thereon. A pattern 1 is marked on the foil from which the resistor is to be produced by a method involving printing followed by etching as described in Specifications 639,178 and 690,691, the principal direction of current flow OP being arranged at 45 degrees to the direction OR, this direction being that in which the number of atoms per unit length in the surface is greatest. The foil is secured to an insulating web which is also marked with its direction of minimum temperature coefficient of expansion; this direction is made to coincide with the direction OP. Prior to the preparation of the component, stresses within the foil are relieved by a heat process after which the foil is polished on its exposed surface, e.g. mechanically, chemically or electrochemically, this polishing process also reducing the foil to its desired thickness.
