Abstract

835,146. Rolling. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Sept. 17, 1958 [June 17, 1957], No. 19057/57. Class 83 (4). In a ring rolling mill having a pair of edging rolls, a feeler roller is urged against the outside of a rolled blank and, on being forced back by the radial spread of the blank, actuates a valve in circuit with an hydraulic cylinder and piston unit which retracts the edging rolls. The internal working roll 12 is mounted on bearings 16, 20 in a carriage 22 which is slidable towards and away from the external working roll 10 by a cylinder 24. The pair of edging rolls 26, 28 are mounted in a carriage 30 which is movable by a cylinder 32 supported in the carriage 22 and the roll 28 is driven through gearing from a motor 48 while the roll 26 is rotated by a blank B. The housing 40 of the edging rolls 26 is vertically adjustable by cylinders 62 and 54 which are controlled from a valve block 86. The feeler roller 64 is mounted on a block 66 from which a spindle 68 extends into a valve 70 closed by a spring 71. When the valve 70 is opened the rear end of the cylinder 32 is connected to a sump 84 and allows the pressurized piston to retract the edging rolls. Alternatively the movement of the carriage 30 may be controlled by a hand-operated valve block 72.
