A rolling mill comprises a pair of work rolls 20, means 17 for adjusting the distance apart of the rolls, and a constant pressure hydraulic cylinder 18 for urging the backing rolls 14 against the means 17 with a pressure greater than the working pressure between the rolls. The chocks 15 and 16 of the working rolls are situated within the backing roll chocks 12 and 13, the means 17 being wedges or screws. Additional hydraulic cylinders may be provided between each working and backing roll chock to urge them apart. These cylinders may be used in conjunction with crowned rolls to give transverse gauge control of a workpiece, as described in Specification 904,075.
