Abstract

834,971. Ventilating. STEWART-WARNER CORPORATION. May 2, 1958, No. 14143/58. Class 137 [Also in Groups XI and XXVII] A vehicle heating system comprises a burner, a heat exchanger having a combustion chamber and an exhaust, a nozzle delivering fuel to the burner from a pump through a valve, a spark ignition, a blower delivering air to the burner, and an electric control system to open the fuel valve and operate the ignition when heat is required and to close the valve and stop the ignition when heat is not required and also to operate the blower independently of the operation of valve and ignition. As shown, fuel is supplied from a pump 62 driven by a motor 66 through a valve 64 to a nozzle 36 in a perforated burner cone 32, a blower 40 also driven by the motor 66 supplying air for combustion through the perforations. A fan 24 supplies air over a combustion chamber 30, having an exhaust 34, to a plenum 12 from which the air is distributed to various positions within, for example, a motor car. A temperature sensitive device 70 in the plenum when in the closed position operates relays to start the motor 66, open the valve 64 and energize a transformer to supply current to a spark gap 50 in the burner cone near the nozzle; when the required temperature is attained in the plenum the valve 64 is closed, the motor 66 remaining in operation, and the spark stopped. The fan 24 may be used to drive air over the combustion chamber or the ram effect of motion may produce the flow. A further fan 18 may be provided for defrosting.
