Abstract

527,149. Heating and ventilating vehicles. HOUDE ENGINEERING CORPORATION. March 31, 1939, No. 10189. Convention date, Jan. 20. [Class 137] [Also in Groups XIII and XI] A device for heating the interior of a motor vehicle comprises a radiator 18 supplied with a heating medium (exhaust gases from the engine, or combustion products from a burner), a blower 46 for circulating the heating medium through the radiator, a fan 22 for causing the flow of air to be heated past the radiator, and a single motor M for driving both the blower and the fan. Liquid fuel from a pump 35 is supplied to a float chamber 33 from which it flows to a valve chamber V in which a needle valve 36, pressed by a spring 41 to close a port 37, is controlled by an electric coil 39. The liquid fuel enters a carburetter 26 through a nozzle 30 and jet 31, and the combustible mixture passes through a pipe 25 to a combustion chamber 14 in which it is ignited by a coil 58. The combustion products are drawn through the radiator 18 by impeller 44, and delivered by a pipe 49 to outlet 50, the motor 14 which drives the impeller 44 also driving the fan 22 which draws air through the radiator, and discharges the heated air at the open ends of a casing 16. A thermostat at 64 arranged for example at the back of a seat 11 cuts off the current supply when the air temperature rises. When the thermostat 60 cuts off the current to the heating coil, the current supply to the motor M is correspondingly increased, and the fan is speeded up. In a modification, fresh air may be drawn in to mix with the heated air.
