834,872. Chucks. ERICKSON TOOL CO. June 20, 1958, No. 19888/58. Class 83 (3). A diaphragm-chuck comprises a mounting- plate 1, Fig. 2, a back-up plate 18 forming. a cylinder, and a diaphragm 20 secured together by screws 17, a piston 4 being axially slidable in said cylinder by extending portions 29, 30 located in plates 1, 18 respectively, seals being provided to prevent ingress of foreign matter to said cylinder. A fitting 7 provided with an inlet port 8 and passages 9, 11 for supplying fluid to piston 4 through passage 12, is secured to plate 1 by screws 5, and a stop-screw 15 for locating work is screwed into boss 14 and is retained and sealed by a ring 16. Screw 15 may be replaced by one of different head-thickness. Back-up plate 18 has radial slots 23 for drawing off foreign matter which may collect between said plate and diaphragm 20, and has mounted on it members 19 forming work-stops. Jawmounting members 35 are secured to diaphragm 20 by cleats 34, said members having a radiallyextending dovetail groove in which slide jaws 32 and stops 37, the outermost position of the stops being determined by pins 40. Jaws 32 can be adjusted by screws 38 and locked by screws 42 which close the dovetail grooves which are slotted at 35a, Fig. 3. Fluid admitted to the left side of piston 4 moves the piston and actuator 31 to the right, as shown in Fig. 2, to flex portion 35 of diaphragm 20 and move jaws 32 outwards to allow the insertion of work up to stop 15. Release of fluid-pressure allows the jaws to grip the work. Work may be gripped internally by the outside of the jaws, pressure then being admitted to the right side of piston 4. Alternatively, work may be gripped on application of fluid pressure and released by flexing of the diaphragm.
