Abstract
834,738. Conditioning grain. SVENSKA FLAKTFABRIKEN A.B. March 27, 1958 [March 29, 1957], No. 9849/58. Class 58. [Also in Group XIII] In conditioning grain, it is conveyed along a supporting plate and fluidized, dried and cooled by forcing gaseous medium such as air upwardly through the grain and, between the drying and cooling operations, the grain is passed through an equalizing zone wherein it is substantially isolated from the influence of the gaseous medium, e.g. not fluidized. The grain may be conveyed through the equalizing zone by a scraping conveyer or by vibrating the supporting plate. In one form of apparatus, Fig. 1, the grain is fed from a hopper 4 along a perforated plate 8 in a chamber 1 having a roof 6 and a base 7 and the conditioned grain is received in a hopper 16. A partition 17 divides the space 10 between the plate 8 and the base 7. The portions A and C of the plate, corresponding, respectively, to a drying zone and a cooling zone, are perforated, but the portion B, corresponding to the equalizing zone, is unperforated or, as shown, is provided with perforations having a considerably reduced flow area compared with those in the portions A and C. A fan 21 supplies gaseous medium, through a heater 20, to the space beneath portions A and B and, through a pipe 18, to the space under portion C of the plate. The gaseous medium having passed through the grain leaves the chamber through an opening 11 in one or both of its sides and passes into a duct 22, Fig. 2, having an outlet 24 with an inwardly bent edge 23, which prevents egress of grain. The gaseous medium may be returned to the fan through a dust-settling chamber. In another construction, Fig. 3 (not shown), the space 10 is divided into three compartments corresponding to the drying, equalizing and cooling zones and the gaseous medium is supplied to each compartment by a separate fan. In yet another construction, Fig. 5, (not shown), a drying chamber provided with a perforated plate is superposed on a cooling chamber provided with a perforated plate and the chambers are connected by a vertical passage, which constitutes an equalizing zone.
