Abstract

834,538. Mirrors for vehicles. DRANSFIELD, H. May 8, 1956 [April 16, 1955; Oct. 12, 1955], Nos. 11010/55 and 29008/55. Class 103(2) [Also in Group XXV] The supporting arm 1 of a rear-viewing mirror, for a vehicle has a hollow lower portion 2 housing a spindle 3 which is surrounded by a compression spring 4, located between a washer 5 at the top of the spindle and a bush 6 screwed within the hollow of the arm 1, and has an enlarged screwthreaded lower end 7 for engagement with a base member 8 and also a securing nut 9 which are disposed on opposite sides of the wing w of the vehicle. The arm portion 2 has a tapering spigot of square cross-section forming cam surfaces 2a adapted to mate with a correspondingly shaped socket 8a in the base 8, and the arrangement is such that if the arm 1, with the mirror, is displaced by an accidental blow, it is restored by the spring to its original position. The screwthreaded part 7 may be separate from the spindle 3, in which case the projecting lower end of the latter has a number of holes into one of which is inserted a taper pin whereby the spring may be adjusted. In a modification, the arm part 2 and base 8 are provided with cam faces which extend around 360 degrees and include three roots and three crests, there being 60 degrees between each root and its adjacent crest.
