Abstract

Class 103(6) [Also in Group XXXIV] In a railway vehicle, the axle boxes or blocks 4, Fig. 1, are slidable in substantially vertical guides 5 of the vehicle frame 1, the latter being suspended on the boxes or blocks by means of hydraulic or pneumatically operated mechanisms 10 which operate directly or indirectly through levers 6 on the boxes or blocks, and two or more bracking members 11, 13 are resiliently mounted on the frame 1 and are arranged to be brought into frictional contact with the track rails or wheels 3 by lowering the frame 1 towards the track. The levers 6 are pivoted at 8 on the frame 1 and resiliently connected through springs 9 to the hydraulic mechanisms 10 each comprising a piston 18 working in a cylinder 17. The piston 18 is connected to a ram unit 19 in turn connected to a fixed bracket 20. Fluid is pumped into the ram units 19 by a pump 21, Fig. 2, and released by means of a valve 22, the hydraulic circuit being indicated at 23. The pump 21 is operable by a handle 24. The springs 9 provide the normal running resiliency. The brake at each side of the frame comprises a shoe 11 shod with frictional material 13 and is slidable on vertical rods 14 on the frame 1, a rubber cushion 15 or arrangement of springs being provided between the shoe and the frame 1. The hydraulic rams may be vertically disposed and act directly on the boxes 4.
