Abstract

834,090. Cooling systems for internal combustion engines. METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd. Sept. 18, 1958 [Sept. 27, 1957], No. 30359/57. Class 64(3) An internal combustion engine having a main cooling system which includes a pump 1 of the kind which permits the passage of coolant therethrough when stationary, is provided with an auxiliary circulating system comprising means for extracting a portion of the coolant from one part and injecting it into another part of the main cooling system to effect slow circulation of all the coolant for a time through the engine after a shut-down in order to remove excess heat remaining in the engine. In the form shown, the main cooling system includes pipes 2, 3, 4 and 5 for conveying coolant between the radiatior and the cylinder block of a diesel engine (not shown), and the auxiliary system comprises a motor driven pump 11, communicating with the pipe 4 through a pipe 14 and an injector 16 connected into the pipe 3. The pipe 2 is formed with a diffuser throat 17. After a shut down of the engine with consequent stoppage of the main pump 1, the auxiliary pump 11 is started thereby drawing coolant from the pipe 4 and injecting it into the pipe 2, hence causing a slow circulation of coolant through the engine as required. A make-up tank may be connected into the main cooling system.
