Abstract
By means of a catalyst, carbon monoxide and hydrogen are converted to a gaseous hydrocarbon mixture, predominantly ethylene, at normal or superatmospheric pressure (e.g. atmos.) and 350-520 DEG C., preferably 350-450 DEG C., with a preferred contact time of below 5 seconds; the fluidized bed method may be used. The catalyst is a mixture of four components, each of which may contain one or more of the specified ingredients: (1) (a) ZnO, CdO, Cu or Ag, with (b) an oxide of Cr, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W or U; (2) a Group VIII metal or compound thereof; (3) an oxide or hydroxide of Al, Si, Ti, Zr, Hf, Th, Sc, Y, or of a rare earth element; (4) a carbonate, oxide or hydroxide of an alkali metal. Component (1) may be activated with an oxide of one or more of Mg, Zr, Hf, Th and the rare earth elements, while component (2) (which preferably constitutes not more than 10%, particularly 0.1-1% of the total catalyst weight) may be activated with one or more of Cu or Ag or oxides of Mg, Th, Mn, or the rare earths. The catalyst is preferably supported on an inert carrier of large surface area, particularly kieselguhr, pumice, ceramic material, a synthetic or natural silicate, fuller's earth or lignite ash. Alternatively the first or third components may serve as the carrier. Constituents specified in examples are oxides of Al, Cr, Mn, Zn and K; Cu, Ag and Co; and kieselguhr. Prior to use the catalyst may be reduced with hydrogen, optionally after having been activated by heating in air. Regeneration may be effected by heating in air, which may contain added nitrogen, followed by reduction.ALSO:By means of a catalyst, carbon monoxide and hydrogen are converted to a gaseous hydrocarbon mixture, predominantly ethylene, at normal or superatmospheric pressure (e.g. 20 atm.) and 350-520 DEG C., preferably 350-450 DEG C., with a preferred contact time of below 5 seconds; the fluidized bed method may be used. The catalyst is a mixture of four components, each of which may contain one or more of the specified ingredients: (1) (a) ZnO, CdO, Cu or Ag, with (b) an oxide of Cr, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W or U; (2) a Group VIII metal or compound thereof; (3) an oxide or hydroxide of Al, Si, Ti, Zr, Hf, Th, Sc, Y, or of a rare earth element; (4) a carbonate, oxide or hydroxide of an alkali metal. Component (1) may be activated with an oxide of one or more of Mg, Zr, Hf, Th and the rare earth elements, while component (2) (which preferably constitutes not more than 10%, particularly 0.1-1% of the total catalyst weight) may be activated with one or more of Cu or Ag or oxides of Mg, Th, Mn, or the rare earths. The catalyst is preferably supported on an inert carrier of large surface area, particularly kieselguhr, pumice, ceramic material, a synthetic or natural silicate, fuller's earth or lignite ash. Alternatively, the first or third components may serve as the carrier. Constituents specified in examples are oxides of Al, Cr, Mn, Zn and K; Cu, Ag and Co; and kieselguhr.
