833,370. Curving. SOLAR AIRCRAFT CO. Dec. 21, 1956, No. 39089/56. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for bending sheet material to arcuate form comprises a movable element having a deformable portion, a stationary member having a rigid forming edge exerting deforming pressure on said deformable portion, and means for feeding a work blank between said movable element and the forming edge of said stationary member. A rubbercovered roller 18 is supported and driven at one end by the spindle of a lathe head 12 and is supported at its other end by an upright 30 on a stand 16 adjustably fixed on guideways 14, 15 of the bed 13 of the lathe. A cross-slide 40 on the stand 16 supports, on vertical members 56, 58, a guide-block 66 to one side of which the members 56, 58 are secured. The block 66 is formed as a wedge 72 with an edge 74 parallel to the roller 18. An endless belt 86 runs over the wedge 72, being driven by contact with the roller 18 to feed a metal blank to the bight between the roller 18 and the edge 74, passage therethrough causing the blank to curve under the edge 74. Pressure between the edge 74 and roller 18 is adjusted by a screw 98 moving the cross-slide 40. To form an elliptical or other non-circular section the roller 18 may be mounted with a slight eccentricity. By angling the edge 74 with respect to the roller 18 a conical shape may be formed.
