Abstract
The invention comprises a crystalline hydrated vitamin B12/phenol complex having the empirical formula C63H88N14O14PCO(R)n(H2O)x\t in which n is 2 or 4, x is an integer from 4 to 11, and R is a phenol, and a process for the production of highly pure vitamin B12 which comprises adding a phenol to an aqueous solution of vitamin B12 containing at least 0.05% by weight of vitamin B12 thereby to form a vitamin B12/phenol complex, the amount of added phenol being less than the solubility limit in the said vitamin B12 solution, but sufficient to render said complex insoluble in the solution, allowing or causing crystallization to proceed, isolating the resulting hydrated vitamin B12/phenol complex crystals, mixing the said crystals with water whereby an aqueous vitamin B12 solution results, precipitating by adding a water-miscible non-solvent for vitamin B12 whereby the said vitamin B12 is precipitated and recovering the resulting highly pure vitamin B12. As phenols there may be used phenol, orcinol, phloroglucinol and hydroquinone. Preferably, the amount of added is less than 3% suitably 1.5 to 2.5% by volume based on the said aqueous vitamin B12 solution. The pure vitamin B12 may be precipitated from its solution after decomposition of the phenol complex by means of acetone or dioxane. Examples describe the formation of complexes using the phenols mentioned above.
