Abstract

832,941. Gas burners. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Dec. 23, 1957, No: 39917/57. Class 75(1) [Also in Group XII] A burner structure for discharging and mixing a stream of gaseous hydrocarbon and a stream'of oxygen-containing gas for partial combustion to produce a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen comprises an inner conduit 9 for one of the gases, having a cylindrical bore and a flared discharge end terminating in a knife edge at a circular discharge port, a concentric outer conduit 8 for the other gas converging inwards and terminating in a second circular discharge port downstream of and in axial alignment with the first discharge port, and means surrounding the burner structure adjacent to the outlet for cooling the discharge end. The flared portion of the inner conduit is at least as long as one diameter of the conduit and has an included angle of between 14 and 45 degrees and the convergence of the outer conduit is at an angle between 30 and 75 degrees to the longitudinal axis. The inner conduit may be connected to the outer by a web forming an annular system of ducts 11 ending in a common manifold 13. Water is circulated at a velocity of at least 100 ft. per second through a jacket 16 which surrounds ducts 11 and manifold 13, the web between the ducts serving to conduct heat from the inner conduit.
