Abstract

1339447 Carbon black reactor CONTINENTAL CARBON CO 28 July 1971 [31 July 1970] 35559/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division F4] In a carbon black furnace there is used a burner and feedstock injection assembly 1 comprising a centre pipe 2 adapted to introduce feedstock into the furnace, the end of the pipe lying within the furnace being equipped with a spray nozzle 5; a second pipe 3 concentrically disposed about the centre pipe, one end of the second pipe terminating flush with the end of the centre pipe; a third pipe, 8, concentrically disposed about the second pipe, one end of the third pipe terminating at a point upstream of the end of the centre pipe, a substantially frustoconical device 16 mounted concentrically and circumferentially at the downstream end of the third pipe, this device flaring outwardly at an angle of 5 degrees to 30 degrees from the vertical from said third pipe, and comprising a plurality of vanes or louvres 19 each twisted at the end thereof to an angle of 10 degrees to 25 degrees; at least two fuel oil pipes 12 positioned in the annulus between pipes 3 and 8 and being axially parallel to them, the pipes 12 terminating at a point downstream of the end of pipe 8 but upstream of the end of pipe 2, the ends of the pipes 12 being connected with at least two spray nozzles 15 the axis of each nozzle being inclined at an angle of 15 degrees to 25 degrees from the axis of pipe 2; means adapted to supply carbon black feedstock to centre pipe 2, means, e.g. conduit 6, adapted to supply cooling fluid to the annulus between pipes 2 and 3 and means e.g. conduit 11 and header 10, adapted to supply normally liquid hydrocarbon fuel to pipes 12. Preferably the fuel spray nozzles 15 are flat spray nozzles, and there may be three spray nozzles spaced apart at 120 degrees. Means e.g. conduit 18, may be provided to supply air to the annulus between pipes 3 and 8 there being an annular passage 19 between the outer circumference of pipe 3 and the nozzled ends 15. On being inserted into the carbon black furnace the assembly may be positioned axially and the furnace is fitted with means (see Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) adapted to introduce a stream of process air and means adapted to direct a stream of process air downstream along the outside of pipe 8.
