Abstract

A burner for use in a carbon black production furnace comprises an inner conduit 21, Fig. 3, longitudinally mounted within an outer conduit 20, an orifice plate 25 in the outlet end of conduit 20, a closure plate 26 in the corresponding end of conduit 21, a plurality of peripheral openings 27 in conduit 21 adjacent the closure plate, and at least one further peripheral opening 28 in at least one of the conduits 20, 21, positioned upstream from the openings 27. The further peripheral openings may alternatively be in outer conduit 20 (Fig. 4, not shown) or in both inner and outer conduits (Fig. 7, not shown). The burner is used to supply the combustion gases to the tangential inlets 13 of a furnace 7, Fig. 1, having combustion section 11 and reduced diameter reaction section 12, for the production of carbon black by the tangential flame-process of the precombustion type. Fuel, e.g. ethane, propane, butane, natural gas, or residue gas, is supplied through inner conduit 21 and air through 20. Provision of openings 28, which are preferably longitudinally out of alignment with openings <PICT:0784947/III/1> <PICT:0784947/III/2> 27, causes premixing of a portion of the fuel and air, before the turbulent mixing zone at the orifice in conduit 20, while provision of openings in the outer conduit 20 permits air to flow out and cool the outside of the conduit. Aromatic gas oil enters at 2, is preheated and vaporized in 3, and passes to axial inlet 4, while a small amount of air enters through annular inlet 16. Specification 679,818 is referred to.
