Abstract

Class 44 [Also in Group XVIII] A cover for attachment to a cooking pot of standard shape to form a pressure cooker has a domed top 4 with a depending skirt 6 forming a cone 7 which fits within the out-turned rim 3 of the pot 2. The cone 7 is encircled by a rubber ring 8 which rolls up the cone when the cover is pressed down to form a tight joint between the cover and the wall 9 of the pot. Hinged to the rolled edge 10 of the dome 4 are a number of bent wire hasps 11 of generally oval shape having their lowermost portions bent to form catches 13 which engage the outwardly projecting rim of the pot to hold the cover in place. Under steam pressure the hasps 11 extend to allow the cover to lift slightly. This lift of the cover opens a relief valve 15 which, as shown in Fig. 3, consists of a spring-loaded piston 16 sliding in a sleeve 19 and normally supported by a sliding pin 21 bearing on the rim 3 of the pot so that the bottom of a slot 20 in the piston is within the sleeve. When the cover lifts slightly the sleeve 19 rides up the piston until the slot 20 opens to allow the release of excessive pressure. A spring-loaded relief valve is also located in the handle 25 of the cover.
