A can opener of the type in which the can is rotated by a roller engaging a rim of the cam and causing the can to move relative to a cutter blade comprises a frame 10, a knurled roller 19, a cutter support 21 movably mounted in the frame 10, and a toggle linkage 33 connecting the support 21 to a handle 38, the toggle links being locked in alignment when a cutter 27 is in its operative position. A sleeve 12 passes through an aperture in the base of the frame 10 and is threaded to receive nuts 14, 15 clamping it in position, the sleeve acting as bearing for a spindle 16 and being enlarged at 17 to fit in a drive take-off socket of a domestic mixer. The cutter support 21 comprises side plates 22 and inner member 23 having sides 24 connected by a bridge piece 25 carrying a spindle 26 of the cutter 27. The plates 22 and member 23 are rigidly connected by pins 28, 29 the ends of which lie in slots 31, 32 respectively in the side walls 11 of the frame 10. Links 33 each pivotally mounted on the ends of pin 29 are connected by a pin 34 by means of which they are pivoted on a U- shaped member 35 mounted at 36 on a pivot pin 37 extending between side walls 11, the base of the member 35 being threaded to receive the handle 38. A cover 42, which may be moulded of thermoplastic, is held by a pip 43 of the frame engaging in a hole 44 in the cover. By moving the handle 38 from a position in which the toggle tinkage is collapsed, Fig. 3 (not shown), to a position in which it is straightened, Fig. 4, the cutter is brought into contact with the top of a tin. The opener may be manually operated by fitting a handle to the roller spindle.
