832,213. Converting. UNIVERSAL TRANSISTOR PRODUCTS CORPORATION. June 5, 1956 [June 29, 1955; Dec. 5, 1955], No. 17391/56. Class 38 (2). High voltage direct current for portable Geiger Muller and scintillation counters, oscilloscopes, ionization chambers and photomultipliers is derived from a low-voltage battery by rectifying the stepped-up voltage of a transistor oscillator. In Fig. 1 a P.N.P. junction or point contact transistor 10 is connected to operate as a blocking oscillator with grounded emitter, to supply pulses at 300-1200 c./sec. to the primary winding 15 of low leakage transformer 14 with a non-saturable core. Output pulses from secondary winding 16 are rectified by a germanium or selenium diode 23 and smoothed by R.C. network 24, 25, 26. Feedback from tertiary winding 17 acts to enhance the current flow through winding 15 from battery 19 until bias of capacitor 20 acts to reduce it. The output voltage is controlled by variable resistor 21. Grounded base and grounded oscillators may be used (Figs. 6, 7, not shown). Before rectification the output may be amplified by two transistors acting in push-pull (Fig. 8, not shown), and the power developed may be enhanced by having two or more parallel connected transistors in the oscillator (Fig. 8, not shown). The output voltage may be rectified in a ladder-type voltage multiplier (Fig. 9, not shown).
