Abstract

3 - Amino - 2 - (41 - methylbenzoyl) - benzene - 1-carboxylic acid is made by catalytic reduction with Raney nickel in alcohol of 3-nitro-2-(41-methylbenzoyl)-benzene-1-carboxylic acid which is made by condensing 3-nitrophthalic acid with toluene and anhydrous aluminium chloride.ALSO:The invention comprises vat dyestuffs of the formula <FORM:0831880/IV(c)/1> where the A's are anthraquinone nuclei attached to the amino linkages in the a -positions and each of which contains in at least one of the b -positions of the benzene nucleus of the anthraquinone skeleton not bound to the -NH-group, a halogen atom or an alkyl group having up to 4 carbon atoms, and X is a primary amino group or an amino group substituted by at least one alkyl or non-vattable amyl residue. The dyes are made by condensing one molecular proportion of a cyanuric halide with two molecular proportions of the appropriate a -amino-anthraquinone and reacting the product obtained with at least one molecular proportion of ammonia or an aliphatic or non-vattable aromatic amine. The dyestuffs dye and print fibres of natural and regenerated cellulose yellow and orange shades, and may be used as pigments. 1 - Amino - 6 - methylanthraquinone is made by cyclizing 3 - amino - 2 - (41 - methylbenzoyl) benzene - 1 - carboxylic acid with concentrated sulphuric acid.
