Abstract

831,786. Gas-turbine blades. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 28, 1956, No. 16431/56. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXVI] A molybdenum or molybdenum base alloy gas-turbine blade is successively electroplated with chromium, e.g. from a chromic acidsulphuric acid bath, given an electrolytic nickel strike coating of at least 0.5 mil. thickness from a high chloride bath, electroplated with low-stress nickel, e.g. from a weak nickel chloride bath, subjected to a slow heat treatment cycle in a reducing atmosphere in which the temperature is raised to at least 1600‹ F., electroplated with a second layer of chromium, and subjected to a second slow-heat treatment cycle in a reducing atmosphere in which the temperature is raised to at least 1800‹ F. Preferably the total thickness of nickel deposited is from 2 to 4 mils., the reducing atmosphere is dry hydrogen, and after the first slow-heat treatment the nickel surface is reactivated by dipping in dilute hydrochloric acid. The heat treatments are such as to effect bonding by diffusion.
