Abstract

831,467. Washing-machines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 7, 1956 [Sept. 7, 1955], No. 25624/55. Class 138 (2). In a horizontal rotary drum type washing- machine having bulges in the inner cylindrical surface of the drum 10 and pockets 10a between the bulges, buoyancy chambers 12 located at the positions of the bulges reduce the load on the drum bearings when immersed in the washing liquid. As shown, the drum has two vanes 13 which are slightly offset on opposite sides of a diameter of the drum and substantially parallel with this diameter. The tips of the vanes 13 are curled over to prevent the clothes from sliding off the vanes but allow them to fall off when they have been carried to a sufficient height. The total radial distance between the inner edge of a vane 13 and the base of a recess 10a is preferably a quarter of the drum diameter and the speed of rotation in r.p.m. is preferably equal to #850/rwhere r equals the radius of the drum in feet.
