Abstract
831,397. Gravity-separation apparatus. UNITED STATES BORAX & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Jan. 29, 1958 [June 5, 1987], No.2939/58. Class 46. [Also in Group XXVIII] A slurry of crystals of, e.g., potassium chloride is received in a suspension vessel 20, Fig. 1, from a vaporiser 10 and a concentrated slurry is removed from the vessel through a passage 30 and a valve 34, clearing liquid being continuously supplied to the passage 30 above the valve (e.g. from the top of the vessel via pipes 24 and 57 and pumps 26) at a rate which maintains the passage free of slurry when the valve is closed. The slurry is delivered to a receiver tank 43, whence it is discharged to a centrifugal pump 51 on its way to a filter or centrifuge 55, by a jet of liquid introduced at 64, Fig. 2, and preferably derived from the pump 26 via pipe 60. The valve 34 is preferably opened periodically (e.g. 4 cycles per minute) by a timing control device 36 connected by a pneumatic duct 37 to the valve. The ratio of open time to shut time may be between 1/5 and 3/5.
