982,683. Filtering and settling devices. ESCHER WYSS A.G. March 15, 1961 [March 15, 1960], No. 9520/61. Heading BID. A settling device for thickening material to be fed to a centrifuge 5 comprises a vessel 1 with part of its wall tapering downwards, the upper part of which has a non-horizontal strainer-like wall 11 for draining off liquid free of solid water in order to increase the throughput. Solid matter in the material, which is fed by an inlet pipe terminating near the top of the vessel, settles in the lower part of the vessel and liquid free from solid matter is drained off at the top. The thickened material passes through a valve 4 and pipe 3 to the centrifuge, from which the dry solid matter leaves at 7 and the separated liquid is returned to the settling device through a pipe 6. The drained-off liquid which passes through the wall 11 collects in a trough 9, whence it is discharged through a pipe 10. The strainer orifice may be in a detachable filter ring forming part of the wall. The strainer wall may incline inwards to minimize the adhesion of solid matter. In addition, Fig. 3, the trough surrounding the wall may be closed and pressure pulses may be imparted to the liquid in the trough to keep the strainer orifice clean, the discharge pipe 18 having a valve which is opened under discharge pressure but closed during the pressure pulses. The capacity of the settling device may be increased by closing the tap, the pipes 2 and 6 passing through a sealed cover, whereby a greater pressure is possible on the filter surface. The same result may be secured by adding an annular shell 21 to the filter ring 20, Fig. 4. The filtering capacity may also be increased by the addition of a vibrator to vibrate the strainer or filter.
