A machine for bending angle or flat bars comprises a fixed frame presenting guideways, a movable cross-head guided by the guideways, opposite extremities of the cross-head projecting beyond opposite sides of the fixed frame, an arm pivoted at one end to each extremity of the cross-head, clamping means carried by the other ends of the arms and by the fixed frame for gripping bars to be bent, and means for moving the cross-head in either direction along the guideways. Angle bars 22, placed back to back, are inserted through a slot 12 in a fixed frame 1 and, aligned with the slot 12, slots 10, 11 in the ends of arms 6, 8 pivoted at 7, 9 to lateral extensions 4, 5 of a cross-head 3 slidable along the frame 1. The bars 22 are then clamped to the frame 1 by the ram of an hydraulic cylinder 15 and to the arms 6, 8 by rams of hydraulic cylinders 13, 14, the rams incorporating rotatable pins 18, 16, 17 with diametral slots 21, 19, 20 to take the bars 22. The cross-head 3 is moved in one direction, so that the arms 6, 8 bend the bars forward, Fig. 4A, by a ram 31 on the cross-head associated with a fixed hydraulic cylinder 30 and is moved in the other direction, so that the arms 6, 8 bend the bars backwards, Fig. 4B (not shown), by a fixed ram 33 associated with an hydraulic cylinder 32 carried by the cross-head 3. To bend flat bars 29, Fig. 5, auxiliary arms 23, 24 pivoted at 25, 26 to the arms 6, 8 are swung forward so the bars 29 bear against abutments 27, 28 on the arms 23, 24 when the bars are inserted in the machine.
